Book Fund Established to Honor Heimann's Seven Years of Perfect Attendance

Picture
A book fund has been established at the Drake Community Library in honor of Art Heimann and his seven years of perfect attendance at the Bucket Courses. Heimann has attended every class since the Bucket Courses were started in 2009. That’s more than 150 individual classes. Even more remarkable: Heimann is 94 years old.

The fund, which will be known as the Art Heimann Book Fund, was announced last week by the Bucket Courses Planning Committee.  The Planning Committee initiated the fund with a donation of $250. Others in the community are invited to contribute to the fund in honor of Heimann and his commitment to lifelong learning.
In honoring Heimann at its final class this year, the Planning Committee said his attendance was an example and inspiration to others. “In an exceptional community of lifelong learners, Art personifies the joy of learning and the volunteerism that makes educational programs flourish,” said Joanne Bunge, chair of the Bucket Courses Planning Committee.  “The Art Heimann Book Fund will continue to remind us for years to come of the essential role Art has played in community education in Grinnell.”

In addition to attending the Bucket Courses, Heimann has helped with distributing publicity for the series. A skilled woodworker, he also built the lectern that is used in the Caulkins Room of the Drake Community Library, where the Bucket Courses and other lectures are held.

Heimann also served from 1998-2009 on the Steering Committee for Grinnell Regional Medical Center’s Senior Education Program now known as SEED, and is currently a member of the ACES Committee of the Community Education Council, which co-sponsors the ACES summer education program along with Grinnell College. “I have always had a thirst for knowledge,” Heimann said. “The Bucket Courses, SEED programs and ACES classes offer a chance to learn something new and different every week.”

Recalling his growing-up years in California, Heimann said, “I guess I’ve always been curious. I think I frustrated my father at times.”
Anyone wishing to contribute to the Art Heimann Book Fund can make a donation to the Drake Community Library, noting the book fund in the memo line of checks.
