Readings from Clark Lindgren’s course “Criminal Brains”
Books:
The Psychopath Whisperer: the Science of those without Conscience. Kent A. Kiehl, Ph.D. – this is a fascinating read, describes the brain science of criminals from the perspective of one of the most active neuroscientists in the field.
The Psychopath Inside: A Neuroscientist’s Personal Journey into the Dark Side of the Brain. James Fallon – this is similar to the Psychopath Whisperer except the author, a neuroscientist, discovers a personal connection to the subject of criminal brains.
Descartes’ Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain. Antonio R. Damasio – this is a classic, must read.
The Social Conquest of Earth. E.O. Wilson – this is my favorite of E.O. Wilson’s many books, describing the power of social groups, from insects to humans.
Evolution for Everyone: How Darwin’s Theory Can Change the Way We Think About Our Lives. David Sloan Wilson – this is one of my all-time favorite books. You will never think the same about evolution after reading it.
The Anatomy of Violence. Adrian Raine. Much of the material used in the class was motivated by this book. It was particularly useful for organizing the course and coming up with effective ways to teach the material. The book is comprehensive, although a bit dense at times.
